Professor Ita Ewa, Nigerian Minister of Science and Technology, announced that GM products will be available in Nigeria by 2012. He said this statement during the launching of the ISAAA report on Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops for 2012. Nigeria will be joining the other African countries that are gaining the benefits from planting GM crops.
Biotech experts in the country are currently conducting field trials of GM crops. If the results of the trials are favorable, the next step is to commercialize the GM crops. According to the minister, biotech crops have the potential to make significant contribution towards the achievement of the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of cutting poverty by half.
